Matthew Nelson-Mahood

Matthew Nelson-Mahood is a Canadian actor and acting instructor with a decade of professional experience working in film and television.

Originally from North Vancouver, Matthew began acting at the age of 14, booking commercials and short films before landing his breakout role as Jason in the indie cult horror film Dead Shack. Since then, he has built an impressive résumé of film and television credits, working consistently in the Vancouver production industry.

Matthew is perhaps best known for his recurring role as Oliver on The CW’s iZombie, as well as his work in The Magicians, Creepshow, Nancy Drew, and the V.C. Andrews Casteel Family television movies. More recently, he appeared as Young Russell Shaw on CBS’s Tracker and as Aaron in Lifetime’s The Thirteenth Wife: Escaping Polygamy, alongside Academy Award-nominated actress Felicity Huffman.

His other screen credits include When the Streetlights Go On, Broil, Spotlight on Christmas, Danger in the Dorm, and The Social Reckoning.

Beyond his professional acting career, Matthew has a genuine passion for helping other performers discover and develop their own relationship with the craft. He describes acting as one of the most meaningful parts of his life and believes that the depth of the art form means there is always something new to learn, explore, and be challenged by.

As an instructor, Matthew brings a relatable and hands-on perspective to the classroom. Having started his own career as a young actor, he understands the unique challenges young performers face and is passionate about creating an environment where students can take risks, build confidence, and develop practical on-camera skills.

Matthew’s goal is not simply to teach students how to “act,” but to help them understand the craft, make strong choices, stay present, and find the confidence to bring their own authentic perspective to every scene.

The most integral part of the intensive that I've been left with is a sense of community. Sometimes the world of film and television can seem intimidating, but with a good arsenal of friends, mentors and colleagues, I feel empowered, and enthusiastic. At VAS, my community supported me everyday, and acted as though my future success as an actress was an absolute. We learned from one another, and grew, and I feel stronger, and confident as a result. The land of Film and TV doesn't seem so intimidating anymore, because not only has the intensive instilled me with a great foundation of skills to keep me grounded, it's also given me a great community of people to help support me in my continuing journey...
